There is no real argument that there are now better kits that are detailed to a higher degree than this one, there is however an argument that all of Hasegawa’s 1/48 Eagle kits are still worth your money, time and effort.

Though much of my jet output has recently involved Monogram 1/48 kits, I thought it would also be fun to tackle an older kit from that other bastion of fast jet modelling, Hasegawa.

Having dug around the loft for a suitable candidate I settled on an F-15A, thus allowing me to not only build – for the first time in my modelling career – a single-seat Eagle. This project also offered the opportunity to complete a model in the colours one of my very favourite squadrons, the 48th FIS, further details of which can be found within the following updates on this page:

Assumptions, Social Media And Checking Those References…
There is no real argument that there are now better kits that are detailed to a higher degree than this one, there is however an argument that all of Hasegawa’s 1/48 Eagle kits are still worth your money, time and effort. Built ‘from the box’ it looks more than acceptable; add detail and you’ll end up with a model that is more than a match to almost every other kit currently available.

I had initially planned to build my model ‘from the box’ but decided instead, to use a replacement cockpit, swapped jet pipes and then Sidewinders from a later Hasegawa weapons set. The result I believe is a very pleasing replica of – in my opinion – the best-looking jet ever to take flight!

For the complete story of how this model came to be, please take a look at the June 2023 issue of Model Airplane International, available shortly.

AND THERE’S MORE…
Having built this lovely kit, I plan to tackle two more Eagles in this scale from classic kits, one Monogram, the other Tamiya. Though incredibly popular kits within modelling circles over the years, these are once-again kits that I’ve not so far built! It will therefore be interesting to see how they compare with this one especially Monogram’s offering, many believing that despite its age, it is still the most accurate kit yet produced of this iconic military jet! Time at the bench will confirm one way or the other if that option does indeed hold water…
