It’s far from the best model I have ever built, but in the end I had a lot of fun.

Here’s another completion for work, Italeri’s rerelease of the ESCI 1:72 Fokker F-27 Friendship, in the beautiful colours and markings of Canyon Eagle Airlines.

I began this kit during the summer of last year, working on it outside during the warm evenings that seemed to define the lockdown, as much as news of the awful pandemic. Since then, the kit has been dropped, and broken. The interior has parted company with the fuselage. It has been broken again to repair the damage. Had parts lost and then featured a finish that has pushed me with experiments and new paints, forced rethinks, reworks, fingerprints and all manner of headscratching moments. I even used handpainting instead of airbrushing to ease the path to completion. How it was finished I will never know!

But here it is and despite this being a 30-old-kit that’s frankly seen far better days, I rather like the completed model, warts and all. It’s far from the best model I have ever built, but in the end I had a lot of fun, learned more than I expected and have now after 45 years of building models, completed my very first airliner! I think that that probably makes the path to completion, one that was worth taking!

The first ESCI F27 i’ve seen built. Beautifully rendered. I hope this is not your last airliner.

Spencer: Your usual, restrained weathering is right at home on this airframe. I’m very glad that you persisted in building this kit. It looks like a candidate for a museum piece. Well done as usual. Thanks for sharing.
