MENG 1:48 P-51D MUSTANG

Another thoroughbred to add to your 1/48 fighter collection.

Well, I’ve been talking about it all week, so I thought that you would like to see some teasers of my rendition of the MENG P-51D Mustang. I have to say that I’ve really enjoyed this kit and love the way that the model looks now that it’s complete. Many years ago – or so it seems! – I built the Tamiya kit, but that model is now long-gone, so it’s great to have a replacement for my collection.

As mentioned in an earlier blog entry, the colour scheme wasn’t my first choice, but now that the model is in front of me, I have to say how much I like the markings that found their way on to the model and I think that they really suit the lines of the aircraft. Let’s just call this – in the voice of the late Bob Ross – a happy accident.

There are still a few things to do on this model. I may given the finish another round of weathering and blend some of the smaller details into place a little more and the tyres need to be flattened a little, but as it stands, it’s close to being ready for its starring role in the April edition of Model Airplane International magazine.

So, a very nice kit and a fun project – I hope that you like it!

My thanks go out to Andrew Hills from Antic’s Model Shop chain who kindly supplied the kit that I used here. Cheers Andrew!

I'm formerly the editor in charge of Military In Scale magazine and latterly, Model Airplane International. Editing duties to one side, I'm now a full-time modelmaker with Doolittle Media, working to supply modelling articles and material for a number of their group titles, including MAI and Tamiya Model Magazine International. I'm also an avid fan of Assassin's creed, Coventry City FC and when the mood takes me, a drummer of only passing skill. Here though, you'll find what I do best: build models and occassionally, write about them!

Yes very nice build. Love the City of Winnipeg colours. I live in Winnipeg and have never built. 402 squadron aircraft yet. Will have to correct that.

that’s a great finish. The blue and yellow stripes on the spinner look perfect. Decals or paint?

Love how you’ve finished this one, Spencer. Meng has a winner with this kit, I believe. It’s been out-of-stock at all my usual retailers.
