28th November 2025
The last Friday in November has been a busy day with plenty of work completed, ideas percolated and future plans set in stone.
But first, my retro build…
Yesterday, I posted an update on here discussing my next project and how it will be built without any of the surface effects that define modern builds and their finishes. I was alluding to the idea that models these days are not seen as interesting if finished without any form of wear and if I was to build a model as we used to in the 80s when such things were not de rigour, would the resulting build still be an interesting project.

Let me reiterate that this project is not a debate on weathering, it’s a debate on approach. Weathering might be a subtext, but it’s really about the idea of going back to a period when paintwork was a simplified process. I want that to be the core idea, not a reasoned debate on weathered finishes, because that’s not important. This model will not even feature washes to define detail. I will use some drybrushing to pop features but that’s it – assembly, basic paint, decals, final assembly. Question at the end: is this model still interesting to look at? It’s retro because that’s how models used to be built and painted.
Moving on…
So today, the choice was finalised that I will build the Tamiya Me Bf109G-6, a kit that offers simple assembly with plenty of detail and features, perfect for my planned approach. Along with the model kit I’ll also be able to road-test my new Gaahleri Mobius airbrush, a set of SMS paints and various GodHand tools that I’ve been sent to play with. All in all it should be a fun and engaging project!

Along with that, I’ve been sent a new cluster of builds for Marcus and Tamiya Model Magazine International. Proving once again that I’m not a one trick pony, the kits are Tamiya’s Honda Prelude, their Leopard 2A7 and then Copper State Models Caudron, an involved biplane with a ton of rigging! All of these kits will offer their own challenges, which I need to keep everything fresh. With the Tamiya 1/72 F-14D already in the pile it looks as though my schedule for TMMI will be booked up well into the new year, just as I like it!
See you tomorrow.

It’ll be great to see how the model turns out. To be fair, my modelling skills seem to have peaked around the 80s anyway! Not false modesty; I’m know I’m mediocre and I’m ok with that, although It’s taken me a long time to reach that point. I once looked at a mag and saw what I thought were ref photos of a jet engine but that turned out to be a 1/72 model. I thought I’ll NEVER be that good and just…stopped for several years. Slowly it dawned on me that as long as each build pleased me, I didn’t care what others said. I’ve now got some Airfix kits that I had as a nipper just to see if I have improved at all!
