A MODELMAKER’S LIFE; GRANDKIDS, CENTURIONS AND THE SOUND OF WAR THUNDER…

More War Thunder madness as my Centurion AX transforms from a basic tank, into something a little more exotic...

Given that this vehicle is from War Thunder, I really didn’t want it to look too realistic, the in-game renders pointing me towards more imaginative waters in which to swim.

25th February 2025

I like simple days and that has definite been the case, today.

My day started off with my usual Tuesday meeting with my granddaughter, who I take to school a couple of times a week and then my grandson, who we have on a Tuesday morning. Given the way of the world these days, it always feels like a breath of fresh air and sunshine to spend time with the kids, their lack of edge and innocence contrasting sharply with the worrying negativity of the world around us.

This afternoon was mostly taken up with completing the Resin Scales Centurion AX that I’m completing for Marcus, at least in terms of construction, if not painting.

Having completed the bulk of the kit’s major parts my attention turned to details and what I could, or could not, improve. With improvements in mind, I decided that I would replace some of the thinner parts with my own details, the 3D printing that created the kit, coming up slightly short for the side skirts and exhaust guards.

The skirts were reasonably okay actually and probably could her been used as-is with a little work. The issue was that they looked to me a little thick to me and there were some issues with the printing, the surfaces not being entirely smooth. That being so, I pulled up my big boy pants and rebuilt them from thin plastic card, embellishing each with tie-downs that I removed from the kit parts and then hex bolts, punched using an RB Toolz punch and die. The resulting parts now look to be more in keeping with the rest of the kit, so the work was definitely worthwhile.

The exhaust guards were similarly replaced, though this time with thin Albion Alloys brass sheet. This proved slightly fiddly, curving each of the guards taking a little time to do, especially as each piece needing to match, left and right. Again, the resulting parts were an improvement, so it was time well-spent, if only because the model looks cool with some brass on it!

Tomorrow, I’ll complete the model with some scratchbuilt additions which I hope will take it from being just another tank, into something more fantastical. I plan to rob a spare kit of its tools and aerial mounts (none of which will be accurate!) and then fix some rockets to the side of the turret. Given that this vehicle is from War Thunder, I really didn’t want it to look too realistic, the in-game renders pointing me towards more imaginative waters in which to swim. Those rockets will definitely make it look different!

So, a slightly different day, but one that has allowed some progress on the Centurion. Let us see if tomorrow is just as productive!

See you then.

I'm formerly the editor in charge of Military In Scale magazine and latterly, Model Airplane International. Editing duties to one side, I'm now a full-time modelmaker with Doolittle Media, working to supply modelling articles and material for a number of their group titles, including MAI and Tamiya Model Magazine International. I'm also an avid fan of Assassin's creed, Coventry City FC and when the mood takes me, a drummer of only passing skill. Here though, you'll find what I do best: build models and occassionally, write about them!
