A MODELMAKER’S LIFE: WHY IS EVERYTHING TAKING SO LONG TO COMPLETE?!

My latest model seems to be taking an eternity to bring together. Am I slowing down, or am I simply too easily distracted to focus on getting the job done?

I tend to hold little truck with such things, erring on the side of ‘out of sight, out of mind‘ rather than wasting my precious time exhaustively dealing with nonsense that disappears, as soon as the fuselage halves are joined…

24th January 2025

After the rather personal day that I had on Thursday, it was back to work today at least in part. Liz was supposed to be flying to Belfast for the weekend with friends as part of a joint birthday celebration, so had booked a breakfast that I was invited to this morning. Though with Storm Éowyn in full force, her flights were cancelled (so the weekend celebration had to be rescheduled) the breakfast went ahead as planned, thus taking up part of the morning. It was worth it though as the breakfast was really lovely – and no, I didn’t have a ‘full English’ as I’m trying to be sensible with my food. Actually, I’m not that much of a fan to be honest so often go for something else, which will no-doubt elicit all manner of comments in my direction! Anyhoo…

This afternoon, I returned to my rather cryptic new project that I hope to reveal some time over the next few weeks. I’m not sure if I am slowing down, of if I’m just very easily distracted these days (heavens knows with what, given how smoothly the world is running at the moment!) but the cockpit of this thing has taken me an eternity to paint. It’s not as though it’s large or involved either. The bloody thing is from a single-seat fighter, so it’s hardly capacious and full of features. I even made my life easier by using some very nice Quinta details and I’ve still spent hours on it, much to my annoyance. It should have been a couple of hours, tops, yet it’s taken almost a whole day to do – and that’s without the seat! That reveal over the next few weeks? Yeah, that’s looking more and more unrealistic…

Part of the issue is that it will be seen in some detail in a new book so I wanted it to be as neat and tidy as possible. I’m sure that had it been just for me, such a trifling part of the model would not have been approached in such an exhaustive way. I definitely would have simplified my paintwork, something that I know would have resulted in pretty much the finish that I have now. And no, I don’t buy into the idea that ‘I know it’s there‘. I tend to hold little truck with such things, erring on the side of ‘out of sight, out of mind‘ rather than wasting my precious time exhaustively dealing with nonsense that disappears, as soon as the fuselage halves are joined…

With this update written up, I’m off out to watch some football whilst Liz relaxes in front of the TV and the final of The Traitors. I’m hoping that that will clear my head and perhaps offer some perspective of why this week, so many superficially simple tasks, tasks that I can often do in my sleep, have been such time sinks. Either that or I will end up with a mild headache in the morning and no further clarity. Honestly, the latter is the more likely outcome, but we can live in hope!

TODAY’S MUSIC CHOICES

Before singing off, I’ve had another retro 70s/80s day of music, deciding to listen to a number of classics that I haven’t heard for a while. Here’s what I’ve had playing today:

Big Country: The Crossing

Simple Minds: Once Upon a Time

The Skids: Best Of…

See you tomorrow!

I'm formerly the editor in charge of Military In Scale magazine and latterly, Model Airplane International. Editing duties to one side, I'm now a full-time modelmaker with Doolittle Media, working to supply modelling articles and material for a number of their group titles, including MAI and Tamiya Model Magazine International. I'm also an avid fan of Assassin's creed, Coventry City FC and when the mood takes me, a drummer of only passing skill. Here though, you'll find what I do best: build models and occassionally, write about them!

Well, I wouldn’t want to disappoint you, so I’ll comment that I’d love to have a full English breakfast- it has been far too long! (gingerbob here- I’m not familiar with this new format!)

Honestly Spencer, there’s nothing better than a full English or Irish after a long night’s freight flying… preferably with a couple of pints of Stella..although it did get some strange looks at b’fast 🤔…. then off to bed to dream about Tamiya producing a 32scale A1J Skyraider in full SEAC camo

Liz was lucky. Today’s Ryanair flight from London to Edinburgh ended up diverting to Cologne!

The Traitors?? Sorry not a fan. Steely Dan is my listening pleasure at the moment Spencer. I’ve also heard that listening to classical music whilst modelling concentrates the mind.

Just got the new Airfix 1/48 Lysander through the post this morning and had a quick look at the contents. Very impressive with full interior framework. That could take a few days to build. Got a couple of days at work then three off so fingers crossed I’ll get a chance to start it..

I listen to a lot of ambient and chill music while modelling, music without much in the way of lyrics, helps me focus more. Classical helps too.
