There can be precious few model shops in the U.K. that have a better location than Monkbar Model Shop in York. Situated behind one of the castle gates, the shop has been a feature of this part of town since 1963, making it we believe the oldest extant model shop in the U.K. Certainly, if there is an older one, I’d love to know about it!
Talking to the shop assistant today, it would appear that the current owner started out as a Saturday boy, working in the shop serving customers. The stock on the shelves must have been very different from what we see today and over the years, the development of the hobby must have been a fascinating thing to see, with advances in technology, the change in kit production and the rise and fall of some of the hobby’s most famous names!
If you are in the area I can certainly recommend a visit to this well-established shop. In the meantime, for more information please visit their website: monkbarmodelshop.co.uk
What a treasure! I would love to visit someday.

I just happened upon the shoppe whilst exploring York in 2005. Bought my usual tinlet of Revell #9 as I usually try to do somewhere when I’m in the UK.

Great find Spencer! Unfortunately they’re becoming a rarer sight these days which makes it so special when you stumble upon one.

Lendon’s Model Shop, in Llanishen, Cardiff, has been trading since 1944. Could be the oldest model shop in the country?
