SABRE RATTLING!

A miniature tribute to a modelling hero...

Roger could write a 150 word preview and I would be able to tell it was he who had written the words, without ever seeing his name – he was THAT good.

Well, the end of a long week and the two Sabres are now finished!

If you’ve watched my video today, you’ll have seen my explanation as to why I’ve deviated from the norm and built two of these aircraft, one from the Eduard release (F-86E) and one from an earlier Hasegawa kit (RAF F.4).

For those that haven’t, the Hasegawa kit was actually donated to me by the guys at Models For Sale, who had taken charge of the late Roger Chesneau’s model collection and were selling it off as part of his estate. For those that don’t know, Roger was – in my opinion – the greatest ever modelling author and the single biggest inspiration to me as a budding author and latterly, editor. In his guise as Joe Saki in Scale Models magazine, he was simply without equal and was and still is, an almost perfect example of how to write a modelling feature and deliver material in a witty, eloquent way without ever fluffing a line, padding it out with unnecessary detail, or repeating himself. Roger could write a 150 word preview and I would be able to tell it was he who had written the words, without ever seeing his name – he was THAT good. I do this, because of his inspiration. So when I had the chance to own a kit that he had bought, I had to build it and so the F.4 Sabre is dedicated to my modelling hero. I think he would like it!

These then are my two Sabres, both of which will appear in a future issue of Model Airplane International.

Roger/Joe – these are for you. 🙂

I'm formerly the editor in charge of Military In Scale magazine and latterly, Model Airplane International. Editing duties to one side, I'm now a full-time modelmaker with Doolittle Media, working to supply modelling articles and material for a number of their group titles, including MAI and Tamiya Model Magazine International. I'm also an avid fan of Assassin's creed, Coventry City FC and when the mood takes me, a drummer of only passing skill. Here though, you'll find what I do best: build models and occassionally, write about them!
