A MODELMAKER’S LIFE: MODERN ARMOUR AND ONLINE ALGORITHMS…

With a new modern armour kit on the horizon, is it time to focus a little more on these amazing 21st Century machines?

I am certainly intrigued by the possibility of taking time away from aircraft for a few moments to learn a little more about modern armour and the wider world of modern military vehicles.

10th February 2026

With the prospect of a full day in the studio tomorrow, I took much off today off to spend with Liz, play pickleball, drink coffee and visit friends. It has been shall we say, a most relaxing Friday!

Despite being the weekend, I will be spending much of my time  over the next two days working on the brand-new Tamiya 1/48 Leopard 2A7. Being a fan of this range of kits, I’m looking forward to building and painting the model, that three-colour camouflage being a particularly attractive challenge, especially in such a small scale. The kit looks superb, detail being comprehensive and as delicate as you could wish for in that scale. It will be I am sure, another wonderful project to dive into.

As an aside, it may well be as a result of my research into the Leopard that my online algorithms have now decided that I am now deeply fascinated by modern armour and so I’m being bombarded with pictures and videos of all manner of military machines, mainly tanks, on exercise and within museums. Despite being lower down my list of things to be interested in (after all, they don’t have wings) I am now finding myself pondering other builds away from the Leopard. Not only that, my mind is wandering towards some dioramas built around these modern warriors, which is something I haven’t considered for many a long year! It is as you can imagine all rather distracting!

How long all of this lasts is anyone’s business, but I am certainly intrigued by the possibility of taking time away from aircraft for a few moments to learn a little more about modern armour and the wider world of modern military vehicles. There are so many cool machines to choose from and plenty of kits of them, to build. Who knows, I may even decide to build a 1/35 Leopard to go with my little ‘48th build, which I am sure will be a fun project to complete.

So back to it in the morning. I hope to have much of the kit built and photographed by the end of the day, which should allow a bit of paint-chucking next week. All I have to do before then is decide if I am going to spray that camouflage or apply it with a paintbrush and acrylics. Decisions, decisions…

See you tomorrow.

I'm formerly the editor in charge of Military In Scale magazine and latterly, Model Airplane International. Editing duties to one side, I'm now a full-time modelmaker with Doolittle Media, working to supply modelling articles and material for a number of their group titles, including MAI and Tamiya Model Magazine International. I'm also an avid fan of Assassin's creed, Coventry City FC and when the mood takes me, a drummer of only passing skill. Here though, you'll find what I do best: build models and occassionally, write about them!

On my Tamiya 1/35 Leopard 2A6 I sprayed the base NATO green then brush painted the brown and black with AK3G. I reckon it worked OK 👍
