A MODELMAKER’S LIFE: RUNNING OUT OF STEAM…

I’m sure we all hit brick walls as lengthy projects reach a conclusion. I’m now close to hitting mine…

25th September 2025

Despite today being pretty productive, I’ve definitely felt as though I’m pushing rather than finding the work as easy as I normally would. My energy levels are dropping with each passing day, and though I’m excited to see the finished model, I’m now at a point where I’m finding it hard to see the wood for the trees and mistakes are beginning to creep in.

This happens with every lengthy project I complete. There is a point where I simply run out of steam and I have to push against the desire to rush the final steps just to get it done. Think of Sunday afternoon homework sessions and you are close to how I’m feeling today. It has to be done, I’m just struggling to work through those final steps.

I have a few things planned for tomorrow, so will have a break in proceedings. That might help to recharge the batteries a little I think. There’s still around a week of work left to complete (at least that’s what I’ve allocated to it…) so I’ll be able to factor in a few breaks, which will be necessary as it’s at that don’t mess it up, don’t mess it up, don’t mess it up stage, where there is zero room for error.

I am pleased with this model and can’t wait to show it off. And that’s what is making all of this worthwhile. A new model of a pretty unique subject that I’ve poured my heart and soul into. Now isn’t that what the hobby is all about?

See you tomorrow.

I'm formerly the editor in charge of Military In Scale magazine and latterly, Model Airplane International. Editing duties to one side, I'm now a full-time modelmaker with Doolittle Media, working to supply modelling articles and material for a number of their group titles, including MAI and Tamiya Model Magazine International. I'm also an avid fan of Assassin's creed, Coventry City FC and when the mood takes me, a drummer of only passing skill. Here though, you'll find what I do best: build models and occassionally, write about them!

Hi, nope, it’s not just you. Exactly the same here. Plus life gets in the way and distractions (sadly) always happen, plus the older we get our energy naturally gets a tad less. I do other things in life too (gardening etc.) so that often burns me out, I couldn’t do what you do without getting tired of it, plus a seated position / posture isn’t helpful overall to one either. I find working to a deadline screws my mental health too, even if I start out optimistic 😉

I can sympathize. Mymojo is off wandering around somewhere and I can’t seem to get it back. We’ve had a lot going on and I’ve had to push modeling aside for while- everything is okay, just busy. I’m trying get a Wingsy Sonia going in hopes of getting jump-started- wish me luck!
