A MODELMAKER’S LIFE: IN NEED OF COLOUR…

With the Jackson almost complete, can I find ways to make the finish a little more interesting?

The issue is that so much of my work involves bright colours and markings, I can’t get too excited with vehicles that are so drab in finish.

20th August 2025

Firstly, is it just me or is this year flying by? It seems like five minutes that we were putting the clocks forward and here we are almost into September! It’s true what they say: the older you get the more time speeds up…

A busy day in the studio today, with the Jackson’s weathering almost completed in one, eight hour session. There really isn’t time for any niceties, so I’ve gone for a broad sweep rather than delicate effects. In that sense it’s very like the Legacy builds that I completed during the COVID lockdown, with overall washes and drybrushing coming into play. I’m happy with it though, at least, happy with the work, if not the look of the completed model…

It’s not the model’s fault, it really isn’t. The problem I have with it, is that it’s so bland. An overall olive drab vehicle is never going to catch the eye, especially the way I paint them, so it is what it is. The issue is that so much of my work involves bright colours and markings, I can’t get too excited with vehicles that are so drab in finish.

Tomorrow I’ll try and add some interest, even if that only involves some small splashes of colour here and there. The weathering isn’t finished completely either, so that might allow some eye catching details to be incorporated into the finish as well. It definitely needs something, so I will see what I can do.

So I’m done for the day, and now off to my model club. I’ve not been there for a while, so it will be good to see everyone and have a chat. Who knows, they may come up with some ideas that will elevate the finish on my little Jackson! Here’s hoping!

See you tomorrow.

I'm formerly the editor in charge of Military In Scale magazine and latterly, Model Airplane International. Editing duties to one side, I'm now a full-time modelmaker with Doolittle Media, working to supply modelling articles and material for a number of their group titles, including MAI and Tamiya Model Magazine International. I'm also an avid fan of Assassin's creed, Coventry City FC and when the mood takes me, a drummer of only passing skill. Here though, you'll find what I do best: build models and occassionally, write about them!

Hi mate, now that looks awesome despite how OD is a bear to make ‘live’.

Personally, I think a bit of Tamiya Khaki or Buff as dust, or muddy footprints would help, and more stowage on rear deck, or a pink / yellow 2-sided Air ID panel would help. Good to see you and chat re the Shropshire Model Expo next year (plug!), a good buzz tonight, 26 there at Horsehay Club. Cheers.
