A MODELMAKER’S LIFE: DECISION MADE…

Future project, F-35s and a day in front of the computer…

29th July 2025

A flat day. Not sure why. I guess it’s the result of my family going back home. Might be the result of completing so many builds recently that have felt like chores rather than charms. Might be the weather, those grey skies lowering the mood where blue skies and sunshine would do much to lift it up. It’s probably all of the above.

Yesterday though offered a degree of catharsis. It’s always useful to engage with my inner monologue, so discussing my nagging need for originality, resulted in a breakthrough at last. And I do mean: at last.

It actually came to a conclusion thanks to a reminder that a friend gave me about something we had talked about in detail some time ago, only for me to forget all about it. I do that. The reminder set the wheels in motion once more, to a point where I thought it was not only a good idea, but one that was to all intents and purposes, perfect.

At the moment I feel the need to be rather vague about this new project, which not only goes against my personal grain, but will no-doubt annoy you as well! It isn’t that I don’t want to reveal it, rather that I want – read: need – to keep it under wraps until it’s finished and on display. Fear not though, when it’s done, you will see it on here…

Alongside planning for my personal project, I’ve being dealing with the F-35C article for the model that I finished yesterday. Truth be told, I’m glad to get this off the bench, the time it has taken to complete taking a bite out of my schedule for August and the models I need to complete then. It was great kit, but as talked about last week, I rather ran out of steam, so getting it off my bench was a relief!

I’ve also dealt with the Spitfire TR.9, that article being written as we speak. Looking back at the images, it really was a simple build with precious few vices to roughen the path to completion. I liked the kit and really like the completed model and though I don’t feel that it’s up to the standard that Eduard achieved with their Spitfire family, it will no-doubt please everyone who buys the kit and dives on in.

So that’s it for today. Band practice tonight and then back to it in the morning. Maybe as day breaks the sun will come out. Fingers crossed, eh?

See you tomorrow.

I'm formerly the editor in charge of Military In Scale magazine and latterly, Model Airplane International. Editing duties to one side, I'm now a full-time modelmaker with Doolittle Media, working to supply modelling articles and material for a number of their group titles, including MAI and Tamiya Model Magazine International. I'm also an avid fan of Assassin's creed, Coventry City FC and when the mood takes me, a drummer of only passing skill. Here though, you'll find what I do best: build models and occassionally, write about them!
