A MODELMAKER’S LIFE: SKYHAWKS, FUSION AND FOOTBALL SHIRTS…

Learning new things can be a real struggle, but it's vital if you want your hobby to progress...

I’m feeling a little more confident that the other items that I’ll need to create including a large door, sash windows and some concrete balustrades, should be within my scope of knowledge thus far.

6th May 2025

Another day of study, this time with the added ingredient of an actual part that I needed to design for the commission that I’m completing, this month.

I discussed this with Liz this afternoon (and then with Drewe who’s helping me to learn Fusion 360) that having an actual project is far more important to a learning process than simply sketching for the sake of it. With time far from on my side, I’m having to work quickly and learn fast so that this involved construction can be finished and delivered, by the first week in June. That being so, today I worked on the first of the parts that I needed to create, an ornate planter that will be accessorised with small fir trees as the model is brought together.

As you can see here, this is far from a complex part. It is though enough of a design that I was able to work with dimensions, edges, chamfers, raised detail and small feet, all on a part that will in reality be only 18x18x18 millimetres in size. Having now done this, I’m feeling a little more confident that the other items that I’ll need to create including a large door, sash windows and some concrete balustrades, should be within my scope of knowledge thus far. It will then be interesting to see if those basic ideas can be developed further to allow the creation of more detailed and perhaps more complex parts, down the line.

Alongside my studies today, I’ve now completed the Skyhawk book ready to be sent off to the printers over the next week. Having closed the presale down on Friday, I now have a fixed number of orders to print, so would like to thank all of you that took the time to look at my updates and order a copy for your library. It really is very much appreciated, helping as it does to keep me working on new models, articles and the occasional book for you to enjoy. The plan is that all orders will be in the post before the end of the month, so I hope when you get your copy, you really enjoy it!

Along with some final design work on the book, I also realised that the Magic Factory Skyhawk that I’d built for its contents was missing some decals that I’d planned to add during final construction, but then forgot all about! That means that all of the completed shots of the model in the book including the front cover(!) will now need to be retaken and the pages rebuilt before going to print. As you can imagine, I’m not massively happy with my lack of focus, but at least I noticed before it went to the printers and was sent out to those who’d bought a copy!

And finally!

As many of you will know, Liz and I are both Coventry City supporters, taking up our seats at every home game and the occasional away fixture. Early on in the season we were lucky enough to be gifted a match shirt worn by one of the players during the first away game of the season against Stoke City. Having had the shirt since then hung up in the wardrobe, we have now been able to have it framed so it can take place within our new snug. Seeing it up on the wall is something we have been looking forward to, so it’s a great pleasure to have it back and in its rightful place!

So that’s it for today. Another day of learning, another day closer to being able I hope, to doing what I need to do with all of this new technology. There will be plenty more to come but I’m sure it will be worth it especially when I finally get to use some of my own parts on some of the models I will built during the months to come…

See you tomorrow.

I'm formerly the editor in charge of Military In Scale magazine and latterly, Model Airplane International. Editing duties to one side, I'm now a full-time modelmaker with Doolittle Media, working to supply modelling articles and material for a number of their group titles, including MAI and Tamiya Model Magazine International. I'm also an avid fan of Assassin's creed, Coventry City FC and when the mood takes me, a drummer of only passing skill. Here though, you'll find what I do best: build models and occassionally, write about them!

Hey Spencer, you were correct about the World Air Power Journal, with the Jaguar feature article. I purchased one via Amazon in the UK and it arrived home in Australia in perfect condition and the book itself was like new. Now just waiting for the kit.
