A Modelmaker’s Life: Remembering Old Friends.

Visits to the hospital, time with family and a night to remember the passing of a close friend...

I always enjoy these moments of relaxation, where the one thing in my life that’s a constant, takes centre stage. With time passing by so quickly, I never lose sight of what it means when we are together, so take the opportunities whenever they arise.

23rd January 2025

It’s a been a slightly different day today, most it being away from the day job.

As part of an ongoing series of MOT tests, this morning saw me visiting my local hospital for an ECG. I’m never that great when it comes to anything to do with hospitals or even visits to my GP, so I can’t say I really enjoyed it that much, despite the doctor and nurses being utterly wonderful whilst I was there. Fingers crossed that the results are fine when they come back to me.

I followed that up a shopping trip that my mum needed to go on to stock up her food cupboards. Given her age, this tends to be a regular thing, so I’m always on hand to drive her to her favourite supermarket(s). I grabbed a few items whilst there, popping in for little more than chicken and salad, a short list that ended up with me shelling out 40 quid of a bag of shopping. Still we too are now stocked up for the weekend!

Having done the shopping, I then got to spend an hour or so with Liz, drinking coffee and chatting. I always enjoy these moments of relaxation, where the one thing in my life that’s a constant, takes centre stage. With time passing by so quickly, I never lose sight of what it means when we are together, so take the opportunities whenever they arise. The coffee wasn’t bad, either…

With a few hours of painting under my belt this afternoon, my attention turned to a night in town this evening. A group of us are getting together to mark the passing of one of my best friends, Mickey, who died suddenly two years ago, today. Never the happiest of days, friends and his family like to gather so that we can celebrate his life, visiting some of his favourite pubs along the way. Glasses will be raised and laughs no doubt had, exactly as he would have wanted it. We all miss him dearly and still find it hard to believe that he is no longer here with us, so we cannot let today pass by without marking it in some way.

Hopefully, I’ll get back to normal tomorrow.

RIP Mickey. Love you buddy.

I'm formerly the editor in charge of Military In Scale magazine and latterly, Model Airplane International. Editing duties to one side, I'm now a full-time modelmaker with Doolittle Media, working to supply modelling articles and material for a number of their group titles, including MAI and Tamiya Model Magazine International. I'm also an avid fan of Assassin's creed, Coventry City FC and when the mood takes me, a drummer of only passing skill. Here though, you'll find what I do best: build models and occassionally, write about them!
