A MODELMAKER’S LIFE…

Annoying errors, a sense of humour failure and the realisation that I can't store or build everything I would like to...

My head fell off in such spectacular fashion I almost boxed the model up ready to place it in the bin, such was my unreasonable and wholly ill-placed anger!!

Oh the things that get under my skin during my working day. Today that has included the gluing of one plastic part against another, you know, the most basic of modelling tasks. Five hours of successful assembly with little in the way of annoyance and then I stick two control surfaces in place, decide that the gaps that I wanted to keep in place are now partly filled with glue and that they look, if not utterly dreadful, then pretty close. My head fell off in such spectacular fashion I almost boxed the model up ready to place it in the bin, such was my unreasonable and wholly ill-placed anger!

Underpinning all of this, is my knowledge that under paint they will look fine but that doesn’t stop me having a miner/major meltdown over issue such as this that no-one but me will ever see, or frankly give two hoots about. I’m not sure what pisses me off more, the fact that I’ve been so sloppy in the first place (if indeed that was the case) or that it annoys me so much. As it stands it’s something of a score draw, only time and paint, deciding which way my opinion will go when the time comes…

In other news, I went up into the loft to find a decal sheet that I remembered putting in a kit box that I’d flung up there – metaphorically speaking – at the end of last year. You’d think that being so recently ‘stored’ the acquisition of this lofted kit would be easy, but no. It took an age to find it and when I did, the decals were for another version not the one I was planning to use them on. What a bloody waste of valuable time.

I can’t keep wasting time like this. Something really needs to be done about the crap that’s up there. There are now so many kits, accessories, drums and all manner of other household items, I simply cannot find anything. Nothing is in order; nothing easy to locate; nothing safe from damage. This year I really need to get rid of as much as possible and that includes made-up models, which are taking over at an alarming rate. It’s come to a point where models that are boxed up and never seen are either rehomed or thrown out. I simply don’t have the space any more to house them. Same for the kits and accessories. I will never build them all, so keeping the prize kits and dumping the rest is going to have to be done. I just have to find the time and wherewithal to get on with the job…

My mood then darkened even further when I discovered that the storage box and my carefully created packaging that I planned to use for the Bolton show on Sunday, had been damaged and needed to be rebuilt. It’s not that much of an issue but given that I’m way at the football tomorrow, time is likely to be limited before leaving early doors in couple of day’s time. At least the 1/24 Spitfire and its box were okay, which was something of a relief. Small mercies, eh? As it stands, I’m not packed and haven’t yet decided what to take with me. I’ll give it some further thought in the morning as I grab the glue gun, ready to fix that box that I hope will protect some of my work on the way to the North West…

TODAY’S MUSIC CHOICES…

Before singing off, I’ve had a retro 80s and mod day of music, deciding to listen to a number of classics that I haven’t heard for a while. Here’s what I’ve had playing today:

Alison Moyet: Alf

Howard Jones: Human’s Lib

The Jam: All Mod Cons, Setting Sons & Sound Affects

The Beat: I Just Can’t Stop It & Public Confidential

See you tomorrow!

I'm formerly the editor in charge of Military In Scale magazine and latterly, Model Airplane International. Editing duties to one side, I'm now a full-time modelmaker with Doolittle Media, working to supply modelling articles and material for a number of their group titles, including MAI and Tamiya Model Magazine International. I'm also an avid fan of Assassin's creed, Coventry City FC and when the mood takes me, a drummer of only passing skill. Here though, you'll find what I do best: build models and occassionally, write about them!

Maybe an inventory check is overdue, and maybe, dare I say, a clear out? Excel is your friend for a catalogue.

Hi, sorry to hear about your stresses, we all get them, don’t worry.

Kits or models can always be brought to the Club, or sold on, swapped at Kingkit or other, or donated to the IPMS stand for charity at the SMW.

I can still call to collect that Bofors gun truck too after you’ve been in the attic again !

If you need a hand, let me know.

    Cheers

Try moving house, that’s a whole new level of clear out! Then top it off with my wife finding out her old work friend has stage 2 bowel cancer ☹️ ( Hopefully in remission) and problems like this pale into insignificance!

I know those feelings when you’re having a good day at the bench and you do something dumb. We all do it! I know from seeing your work you will power through! Good luck!
