He’s a steadfast champion of modeling joy and fulfillment, and his latest post implores modelers to forego competition—particularly the kind found in social media—and build for the fun, not for others.
Spencer notes in his latest post that ‘competition’ in the model making hobby now encompasses more than just the quality of finished models, thanks to social media’s window into actual model making processes. Contest tables and publication in modeling magazines were once the crowning achievements of elite model making, with excellent finished models as the primary, or even sole, measure of success.

Yes, if you leave your sense of self and your enjoyment of model-building to the opinions of others, you truly “can’t get no satisfaction”…. Build for yourself, take healthy pride in improving your techniques, but build what you want, why you want, and to the standard (or lack thereof) that suits you. Depending on the opinions of others for your own sense of self-worth is a road best not traveled at all…..

I rate kits on “fun factor”. I honestly don’t see the point of taking all the stresses I have in my day job and finding new ways to apply it to my hobbies. Yes, I will try new things and take an interest in what is happening in the community, but I will apply or ignore those approaches on each kit, depending on what mood I am in and the subject I am modelling.
