As the year is almost over – if not Christmas, as this is being written on Christmas Eve(!) – I’ve been giving some thought to my favourite kits of 2021 and what is likely to catch my eye in 2022. This is based on what I’ve built this year, not what I have seen being released elsewhere, personal preference being a rather unfair way of deciding on such things as this! So, having taken all factors into account, price, accuracy, ease of assembly and appearance once complete, I’ve decided that Kinetic’s 1/48 Pucara is my ‘Kit Of The Year 2021‘.
THOSE THAT ALSO CAUGHT THE EYE…
Of course there are some notable inclusions in the list, with the excellent Tamiya 1/48 F-4 Phantom and my soon-to-be-built ICM 1/48 OV-10A both serious contenders!
Others, I am sure will point to the Eduard 1/48 Zero, as well as some of the smaller releases this year such as ARMA’s superb Wildcat and Finemold’s successful range of 1/72 Phantoms. There were so many this year: what was your favourite?!

Well, in terms of kits acquired in 2021, not necessarily released in, mine would have to be:
Special Hobby 1/32 Whirlwind (hubba hubba!)
ICM 1/32 Gladiator feels like it should be a tie, but perhaps already having a Silver Wings one JUST bumped it down.
I think that the Airfix 1/48 Vampire will join the ranks once I open my present tomorrow and have a look… and I’m very eager for an ICM OV-10A, but haven’t taken steps to claim one yet.
I also feel that I’m forgetting something, that may have been in my head just moments ago. I guess it is time to wander through the stash and reminisce!

I very much enjoyed the Airfix 1/72 Beaufort although maybe that was a 2020 release.

I am a sloth. and bought only one aircraft kit in 2021 – bought a bunch of 1/35 Shermans though, so I claim sanctuary….. My one kit for 2021 is the highly-regarded ICM OV-10A Bronco. I have always liked the plane and this kit more than replaces the ancient Hawk kit – it is in another universe….. I have fondled the parts in the box, and with enough of Fred Henderson’s elderberry wine I shall do battle on the work bench. May the force be with us…..

Agree on the Kinetic Pucara, but I have it tied with the Modelsvit F-82. This is a wonderful kit, a lot less hard than people expect, and it marks Modelsvit moving from “high-end limited-run” to “mainstream.” It fits like an Aduard kit. With the surface detail of an Eduard. And both are tied with the HKM Lancaster – a complex kit that isn’t complicated and practically guarantees a great result.
