A MODELMAKER’S LIFE: TOMCAT ASSEMBLY…

A day of building on the way to painting in the morning…fingers crossed!

7th January 2026

It feels like I’m repeating myself a little at the moment, but that has been another day of coughing, low energy and general lethargy. This flu bug simply will not let go, the lack of sleep being particularly unpleasant.

Take last night. I went to bed at a reasonable time, but was woken up coughing, so got back up at midnight and didn’t go back to bed, until well after 2am. It’s been like that all week, with nights of broken sleep not really preparing me for anything like a focussed period of work. Not fun.

Despite the night before, I managed to get all of the Tomcat’s assembly done today, ready for photography in the morning. This means that almost everything is now constructed, so I can paint all of the sub-assemblies in one go and then bring it all together in a single session ready for the application of the camouflage and decals. With only a week left until this model needs to be approaching the finish line I haven’t really that much time to complete it, a fact of life hampered as you might imagine by this ongoing illness…

See you tomorrow.

I'm formerly the editor in charge of Military In Scale magazine and latterly, Model Airplane International. Editing duties to one side, I'm now a full-time modelmaker with Doolittle Media, working to supply modelling articles and material for a number of their group titles, including MAI and Tamiya Model Magazine International. I'm also an avid fan of Assassin's creed, Coventry City FC and when the mood takes me, a drummer of only passing skill. Here though, you'll find what I do best: build models and occassionally, write about them!

Hope you get over the flu but soon Spencer. Without sounding a bit, how can I put it, full.of doom. Hope whatevers ailing you that you don’t pass it on through contamination with the model you are building once finished.

You could have caught the bug from your wife. Yeah I know a bit of a negative thought but you never know.
