A MODELMAKER’S LIFE: SORTING OUT THE STUDIO

The rebuild of my studio, begins…

27th December 2025

With today being a free day before my birthday tomorrow, I’ve spent my time trying to plan the rebuild of my studio to allow me to place my new 3D printer ready for use.

This was never going to be a short job. There’s a lot of material in that room, so I’m going to have to not only sort out as much as possible, at least one of the desks will need to be moved from its current position to allow the printer and wash station to fit.

With it being so late as this is being written (we’ve just returned home from an utterly filthy, ‘adult’ panto…) I won’t be able to do any more today. Indeed, the work will be placed on hold for a couple of days as we are off to the Cotswolds for my birthday and then the football the day after. Tuesday though will be all hands to the pump with trip to IKEA on the cards. I will of course bring you more news when I have it!

See you tomorrow.

I'm formerly the editor in charge of Military In Scale magazine and latterly, Model Airplane International. Editing duties to one side, I'm now a full-time modelmaker with Doolittle Media, working to supply modelling articles and material for a number of their group titles, including MAI and Tamiya Model Magazine International. I'm also an avid fan of Assassin's creed, Coventry City FC and when the mood takes me, a drummer of only passing skill. Here though, you'll find what I do best: build models and occassionally, write about them!

3D printing Spencer, where do think our hobby will be in the coming few years? I ask because of the way that 3D printing has got better and better. My personal view is that the aftermarket firms and individuals who dabble in the magic art are bringing out some highly detailed stuff. But, the price of these early full kits are expensive. I should imagine because of the outlay on the raw materials and printers.

Anyway, the reason for this waffling, do you think the likes of the mainstream model manufactures, would they or could they change the way they produce their kits and go 3D?

I notice a new firm ,Airscale, who are bringing out 1/32 Hawker Typhoon. I looked at the one on display at Telford Scale Model World this year. It looks really good but the price is way out for me. What do you think?
