A MODELMAKER’S LIFE: AN UP AND DOWN DAY…

Brisk walks, missing parts and flagging levels of energy - what an odd day…

23rd October 2025

To be honest, I have no idea what it was today, but I have definitely not been on it since the weekend, the excitement, long days and pretty much total lack of decent sleep for five days, being a little difficult to shake off.

I had plenty of solid plans for today, planning to complete all of the Marauder’s construction steps and then hopefully applying some paint here and there. It didn’t quite work out like that…

It actually began in a rather lovely way, a walk along the canal with Liz being the perfect continuation of a day that had begun with another unwelcome blood pressure test. Though cold and rather inclement, our walk was a chance to decompress and though it was dampened – almost literally – by my poor choice of shoes (one of which had a hole in its sole resulting in a rather chilly foot) it was as enjoyable as these walks always are.

And so on to work…

First port of call was to complete the engines, before moving on to the interior and cockpit. All was going well until I noticed a missing armrest from the pilot’s seat. I looked for it without success so was left with no choice but to replicate another pair. It was at this point I started to feel if not unwell, then not quite myself. This lasted a few hours, slowing my work down to a crawling pace. To be honest, I have no idea what it was today, but I have definitely not been on it since the weekend, the excitement, long days and pretty much total lack of decent sleep for five days, being a little difficult to shake off.

Tomorrow will see the completion of the construction steps, there being very little left to do. That gives me two full weeks to paint the model and then deal with its presentation ready for SMW. All being well, there shouldn’t be any unwanted hurdles to jump, only a simple finish and no experimentation being brought into play. Yeah, famous last words. We’ll see next week if any of those things comes to fruition and I do indeed complete this important model without issue…

See you tomorrow.

I'm formerly the editor in charge of Military In Scale magazine and latterly, Model Airplane International. Editing duties to one side, I'm now a full-time modelmaker with Doolittle Media, working to supply modelling articles and material for a number of their group titles, including MAI and Tamiya Model Magazine International. I'm also an avid fan of Assassin's creed, Coventry City FC and when the mood takes me, a drummer of only passing skill. Here though, you'll find what I do best: build models and occassionally, write about them!
