A MODELMAKER’S LIFE: A BREAK FROM THE SPOTLIGHT…

Building a model just for myself? Whatever next?!

Having a project that’s just for me is really liberating, allowing me to be creative away from the glare of self-imposed spotlights that I’m now keen at times, to switch off.

4th August 2025

For pretty much the last 30 years, almost everything that I have built has been for publication or a private commission. Though I’ve chosen plenty of those models, there has always been a reason for most of them and the builds that I’ve done just for me, have been in the considerable minority.

Recently, that issue has been exacerbated by social media. With an online presence to service, I guess that I’ve felt almost duty-bound to feature my latest work so that I can maintain some flow and keep fans (if indeed that is what you are!) engaged. That has involved daily posts revealing details of a new kit, a technique or some thoughts that I find interesting, and hope that you do too. It’s a constant treadmill that involves images, text and time that I use up when honestly I’d rather be doing other things, like sticking plastic parts together and painting the results!

The new personal project that I began this morning, is going to change all that…

I’ve decided with this one that there will be no images, no discussion on it and no revealing moments on the way to its completion. Though I’ve already started to discuss it with some close friends, I’m going to work on it completely in the dark, just as I would have done before professional responsibilities and the need for online validation, grabbed at times, an unpleasant hold. You won’t see any of it until it is finished.

Today, I’ve spent time putting parts together and not once have I thought about stopping to take pictures. I’ve just got on with it. I’ve even spent a few hours looking at actual books to work out some ideas, create details and set in train how I’m going to complete the model as ideas coalesce into an actual miniature, that I can enjoy looking at. It truly has been like turning the clock back to a time when such things were the norm, rather than the exception.

Truth be told I’m loving this shift in gears. I have the day job to still deal with this month, but having a project that’s just for me is really liberating, allowing creativity away from the glare of those self-imposed spotlights that I’m now keen at times, to switch off.

See you tomorrow.

I'm formerly the editor in charge of Military In Scale magazine and latterly, Model Airplane International. Editing duties to one side, I'm now a full-time modelmaker with Doolittle Media, working to supply modelling articles and material for a number of their group titles, including MAI and Tamiya Model Magazine International. I'm also an avid fan of Assassin's creed, Coventry City FC and when the mood takes me, a drummer of only passing skill. Here though, you'll find what I do best: build models and occassionally, write about them!
