A MODELMAKER’S LIFE: A ROAD TRIP!

Four hours in the car, to spend 30 minutes in Bristol, was still a wonderful time away...

I’m pleased I made the effort to go out today. It was a simple trip that brought us all closer together and that made it more than worthwhile.

27th July 2025

After spending time with family in the garden yesterday, today I enjoyed a few hours with my brother and nephew in a car. Different location: same chance to catch up.

It was actually a moment that I’d not planned. Late last night I discovered that my brother had to take his son James back to Bristol to swap a pair of training shoes that he’d bought, tried on and then found that when he got them home, didn’t fit as comfortably as he’d hoped they would. Bristol, being two hours away isn’t a short journey when you haven’t time to burn, but one that they had to make as the shop was a one-off and the shoes, too expensive not to fit.

Hearing that they were driving down, I pondered the trip for a while and then rang him to suggest I would like to travel with them. Several moments of laughter later, an explanation that the trip was literally going to be: travel, swap the shoes and return home, I agreed to still go. So, this morning, we headed off to visit one of my favourite cities in the UK for the grand total of 30 minutes, before turning around and heading back home. How’s that for a flying visit?

You know what? I didn’t regret the time away at all. I had no shopping to do, so it was another chance to chat, catch up and spend time together before everyone returned to Brisbane in the morning. As it turned out, we didn’t stop talking for the four and a half hours we were together, covered some important ground and made some future plans. It was marvellous.

In an hour we are meeting up one last time for a pint and then that will be that for another visit. We are now planning to travel to Oz in a few years time, but other than online chats, there will be no more face to face contact for a while.

I’m pleased I made the effort to go out today. It was a simple trip that brought us all closer together and that made it more than worthwhile. And no, I didn’t buy any more trainers, even though it was tempting. Maybe next time, eh?

See you tomorrow.

I'm formerly the editor in charge of Military In Scale magazine and latterly, Model Airplane International. Editing duties to one side, I'm now a full-time modelmaker with Doolittle Media, working to supply modelling articles and material for a number of their group titles, including MAI and Tamiya Model Magazine International. I'm also an avid fan of Assassin's creed, Coventry City FC and when the mood takes me, a drummer of only passing skill. Here though, you'll find what I do best: build models and occassionally, write about them!

i’ve got 3 loves other than my number 1 love, the wife. The three other could be called vices, fast cars, plastic models, and cooking food for family and friends. Cudos, your enjoying them too. Change is the spice of life.
