A MODELMAKER’S LIFE: CAMERA PHONE AT THE READY 2.0…

Diorama ideas can come from the most unlikely of places, even a stroll along the beach…

13th March 2025

I mentioned last week that I was always on the lookout for ideas when I’m out walking and that was certainly the case this morning. A post-breakfast stroll not only helped to walk off some of the food and add to the daily steps we are trying to accrue, it also gave me an opportunity to photograph an old concrete building that’ll be perfect for a future, modern diorama.

It wasn’t really the building that caught my eye, rather the weathered and pealing paintwork, so reflective of these types of ramshackle buildings. I liked the shape and detail: I loved the paintwork and weathering!

I’ll definitely try and model something like this when I get back, its style and weathering fitting in with the War Thunder subjects that are so taking my heart these days. What I’ll put with it I have no idea, but it will be fun to find out!

See you tomorrow!

I'm formerly the editor in charge of Military In Scale magazine and latterly, Model Airplane International. Editing duties to one side, I'm now a full-time modelmaker with Doolittle Media, working to supply modelling articles and material for a number of their group titles, including MAI and Tamiya Model Magazine International. I'm also an avid fan of Assassin's creed, Coventry City FC and when the mood takes me, a drummer of only passing skill. Here though, you'll find what I do best: build models and occassionally, write about them!

Thanks Spencer. it’s five degrees here……. You can really feel the heat of the sun in your photos. (You lucky bu***r) But I take the point about the modelling value. How about a dio of a Malta based Spit, beside such a weathered building….?

    G’day Spencer

Heck that looks just like my place. Hahaha 🙂

    Peeling paint and weathering included.

    Ramshackle indeed. Hahaha

Thats what happens when you spend all your spare time in the hobby room and neglect maintenance.

I didn’t know you were in the country otherwise I would have invited you around for a beer.

    Regards
