A MODELMAKER’S LIFE: BEST LAID PLANS, SEVERED CABLES AND FORGOTTEN ARRANGEMENTS…

Ever have one of those days? Today, has definitely been one. Of. Those. Days.

I still have the work to do today, so as it stands I’ll complete this update, finish off what I was doing, drum for two hours and then work a little more when I return home at 10pm. Eating? Yeah, that will have to wait until tomorrow. Like I say: it’s been one of those days.

27th January 2025

Ever have one of those days? Today, has definitely been one. Of. Those. Days.

I had big plans for my opening day of this week. We’d scheduled in a couple of guys who had done some work around the house to come in and work on our hallway to removing some very old plaster and replace it with plasterboards and a smoothly-applied layer of new plaster. We’ve needed it doing for years, so it was good to see it finally being sorted. Whilst that was happening, I’d planned to do some work on my new book project, continue with the construction of my latest model and with that banked, start to tackle the Anson that I mentioned yesterday.

The book and its model progressed well, only held up thanks to the fiddly nature of the build and my desire to capture as much of the progress as possible on film. Planning that this would only take a few hours, it ended up taking all morning and most of the afternoon. This being so the Anson was pushed on to later in the day, a time when not only did I discover that during the removal of the plaster a phone/broadband cable had been severed, I also had a rehearsal an hour from now that I had simply not realised was on.

The damage to the cable was I think, my fault. There were some redundant old cables in the hall that I said could be removed, all of which were quite visible around the upper wall and ceiling. I didn’t notice that there were also a number running down the corner of two of the walls. The guys quite rightly assumed were also not in use, so cut them away as well. Broadband, shot; phone line, dead. A breakdown in communication on my part meant that I that spent several hours reporting the fault, scheduling in an engineer and trying to calm down.

Having wasted time I simply didn’t have, I planned to make that up by working on in to the evening (not unusual against deadlines, when evening and weekend work has been something of a feature of the last 30 years…) when I noticed a WhatsApp message confirming a band rehearsal that had been arranged but I had not noted in my diary. I still have the work to do today, so as it stands I’ll complete this update, finish off what I was doing, drum for two hours and then work a little more when I return home at 10pm. Eating? Yeah, that will have to wait until tomorrow. Like I say: it’s been one of those days.

All being well, Tuesday will be a little more straightforward and I will finally start work on Brett’s Anson. All I have to do is carry out a little more planning, look at my diary and not ignore arrangements that I’ve made weeks in advance. Oh and be more careful when it comes to redundant parts of the house; you never know, they might just be important!

See you tomorrow.

TODAY’S MUSIC CHOICES

Today had been a really disparate day of music, mixing plenty of unashamedly pop albums with a plenty of random tracks suggested by Apple Music. My choices are nothing, if not wide ranging!

Erasure: The Innocents

Simple Minds: Real Life

Electric 101: Electribal Memories

Curiosity Killed The Cat: Keep Your Distance

I'm formerly the editor in charge of Military In Scale magazine and latterly, Model Airplane International. Editing duties to one side, I'm now a full-time modelmaker with Doolittle Media, working to supply modelling articles and material for a number of their group titles, including MAI and Tamiya Model Magazine International. I'm also an avid fan of Assassin's creed, Coventry City FC and when the mood takes me, a drummer of only passing skill. Here though, you'll find what I do best: build models and occassionally, write about them!

I’m really liking your daily dispatches over those on social media. I’ve been weaning myself off the socials since last fall and am feeling a lot better for it. I have my morning grog whilst reading your latest. Big fan. Keep it coming.
