1:48 Airfix Kit Conversion Kits, Reviews 'n' Builds RAF Aircraft

HAWKER HUNTER T7: A T-BIRD IN MINIATURE

Airfix plastic and Aerocraft resin, combine to create an attractive 1/48 replica of this iconic, Cold War trainer.

Aerocraft’s Hunter T.7 conversion is a very tough build, but I think worth the effort when you finally get to see the completed model sat on your desk.

When Airfix released their 1/48 Hunter F.6 several years ago, it was not long before we had the first conversion for it in the form of Aerocraft’s complex, resin, T7 kit. Offered in a variety of different guises within their range, this one, handed over to me during a pre-COVID IPMS Scale Model World show, replicates RAF aircraft in both their early High Speed Silver and yellow and later, red/white and Light Aircraft Grey, plumage. For more information on the kit used, pleased follow this link.

Aerocraft’s conversion is certainly not for the fainthearted. Involving the almost complete destruction of the Airfix fuselage, you will also need to be accurate with your cutting and then if mine was anything to go by, bring your A-game to the table when it comes to filling, sanding and surface preparation, the latter a particularly important factor should you as I have here, choose to finish the model in HSS!

This model has been built for a central feature in my new Hunter book. Released some time in March (at least that’s the plan!) the book with feature three builds: an out of the box F.6, a detailed F.6 and this complex conversion, all of the chapters featuring step by step construction and painting guides. You’ll also find some full-sized references as well, including a detailed walk round of a wonderfully weathered T.7 found at Bruntingthorpe – it is, as I am sure you’ll see, the perfect subject for a diorama!

In the meantime, I really hope that you enjoy seeing this latest build and that it perhaps inspires you to tackle something along similar lines for your own collection. Aerocraft’s Hunter T.7 conversion is a very tough build, but I think worth the effort when you finally get to see the completed model sat on your desk.

As soon as I have any more details on the Hunter book I’ll post it on here, but as a teaser, here’s the cover to get the juices flowing – I really think that you are going to like this one!

See you next time.

I have the kit and the Aerocraft set, and have been daunted by it. Thanks for the inspiration.

I think tough build is fair! Mine is stalled because I can’t figure out how to get the canopy to fit closed, and given that the beautiful lines are one of the reasons I wanted a two-seater Hunter in the first place, I don’t really want the lid waving around in the air…

I’d recently started the T.8M (and referenced your build on my FB modelling site) and was looking for this as I thought “he built this just recently”!

But no, it’s been six months already! What a beautiful job. I can see me picking up another Airfix kit and Aerocraft conversion to make one of the T.7 variants. It’s a lot of cutting-up of a nice kit to get there!

My father once flew 611 T for 1hr 10 minutes alongside Grp Capt Charles Gibbs from Wattisham in 1965 on the 6th of June. Sadly the aircraft was lost in a fatal accident at Boscombe Down 3 years later.
